13COURSE
MBBS in Serbia Duration and Syllabus
The total duration of an MBBS education in Serbia is 6 years, where 5 years are academic and 1 year is the mandatory clinical training/rotation. Serbian medical schools award an MD degree, which is equivalent to an MBBS in India. The first 2 years are the pre-clinical phase, the 3rd year is the paraclinical/pre-clinical bridge phase, the 4th and 5th year is accadmeic and training in hospitals covering specialised subjects of medicine, and the 6th year is a mandatory clinical rotation.
Course length varies by university, and it determines whether your degree satisfies the 54-month rule.
Medium of Teaching
The four Universities in Serbia that offer a 6-year MBBS programme to international students are in English medium. All lectures, practical laboratory work, textbooks, and exams are conducted in English. These universities follow the NMC guidelines mandating that the entire foreign medical programme and clinical training must follow the rules for licensing in India.
What this means for you: Because the degree is offered in English, international students don’t face any language-related issues in the entire 6-year programme. But Indian students are encouraged to learn Serbian so that they can easily communicate with the patients during their clinical training.
Language is the thing graduates most often say they underestimated.

Indian medical graduates can practice in Serbia after completing their MBBS course. But you must clear the state licensing exam to practice there. Also, you must have working knowledge of Serbian if you intend to practice medicine there.
Study or Practice Medicine in Other Countries
